Mark 12: 28-31
And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Isreal: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. "And you shall love the Lord and God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' "The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these.'
We often think of love as something that is reciprocated by the people closest to you: a significant other, your family, pets, etc. But what about the people you don't know and the ones you can't even see in front of you? Jesus asks us in these verses to still have faith and love him and others by not soley relying on sight- In other words, do not judge a book by its cover when it comes to interacting with strangers, including Jesus. Furthermore, we cannot actually see Jesus- unless we have a pure heart; so therefore, we need to have faith that he is still there and working in our lives despite his seemingly apparent absence. Most of us know the golden rule of treating others the way we want to be treated, so treat the people you don't know with grace and respect; treat the one whom you can't even see with even more respect because he loves us the most and is the biggest significant aid in our lives. This is why Jesus says so vehemently that these two commandments are of the utmost importance in our walk with him.
